Taking health, environment and safety (HES) to a higher level
Oras is a company with several smaller companies spread throughout Norway, with over 650 employees in total. The company prioritizes EHS (environment, health and safety) and they challenged us to make a web based e-learning course about this for all employees. Our collective goal was to make the course fun and engaging, and to achieve this we decided on the genre serious gaming and developed a complete 3D universe. The game was the engine in a comprehensive EHS campaign. Each team consisted of a company, and the goal was to become the best team when it came to HES. On a separate campaign site the participants could at all times follow the results from each team and a personal high score list with 20 of the best players.
About the game
In the game you play a character called Bjørn throughout a workday at Oras. You meet several challenges related to work clothes, protective equipment, chemicals, reporting of unwanted incidents (RUH), psychosocial work environment and secure job analysis (SJA). The entire game takes place in a 3D world, and all characters are modelled and animated in 3D. The game is real time and all actions have consequences later in the game. You are measured by the three parameters security, values and productivity. The project is produced in high res 3D and built with our proprietary game engine.
Integrated with and internal marketing campaign
In relation to the game we also developed an internal PR campaign. The campaign consists of a comic strip in the internal newspaper and a teaser-film (see film below), in addition to sms’s and emails to the employees. During the campaign period the employees could follow the development in the game via a dedicated campaign site. After the campaign, we have followed up with a dedicated EHS handbook and posters in the same style as the game universe from Er du sikker (Are you secure/sure)?
Using serious gaming to engage people
Serious gaming takes the best from learning - and game theory, and the result is engaged learning, that is why we chose this genre to work with. The goal of the project was to create engagement around HES, give information about HES and encourage reflections around secure work situations.
Great results for Oras
With close to 90% completion rate for this game, we have really made HES top of mind. During the campaign period we observed an incredible high level of engagement, and the feedback from the participants have been overwhelmingly positive.
